Whiplash Treatment

Specialized Recovery for Neck Injuries from Auto Accidents and Trauma

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head and neck — similar to the cracking of a whip. It is most commonly associated with rear-end car accidents but can also result from sports collisions, falls, or physical impacts. The rapid motion can damage muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, and nerves in the cervical spine.

Whiplash symptoms often do not appear immediately after the injury. It is common for pain, stiffness, and other symptoms to develop 24 to 72 hours after the incident. This delay can cause people to underestimate the severity of their injury. Early physical therapy intervention is critical for optimal recovery and to prevent chronic pain.

Symptoms of Whiplash

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Worsening of pain with neck movement
  • Loss of range of motion in the neck
  • Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull
  • Tenderness or pain in the shoulders, upper back, or arms
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms
  • Fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating
  • Jaw pain and difficulty chewing

Our Treatment Approach

Cervical Manual Therapy: Our FAAOMPT fellowship-trained therapists use specialized hands-on techniques to restore normal joint mechanics in the cervical and thoracic spine, reduce muscle guarding, and alleviate pain.

Progressive Exercise Program: A carefully graduated exercise program to restore range of motion, rebuild deep cervical stabilizer strength, and improve neck endurance — all while respecting tissue healing timelines.

Pain Management: Education and strategies to manage pain levels including postural correction, ergonomic advice for work and sleep, and activity modification guidance.

Vestibular Rehabilitation: If your whiplash has caused dizziness or balance problems, our therapists can assess and treat vestibular dysfunction as part of your recovery plan.
