Chronic knee pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physical therapy, and one of the conditions where therapy delivers the most consistent results. If you have been living with knee pain for weeks, months, or even years — whether from arthritis, a previous injury, or no obvious cause — a targeted rehabilitation program can significantly reduce your pain and restore your ability to walk, climb stairs, exercise, and enjoy life without constant discomfort.
Why Knees Become Chronically Painful
The knee joint is caught between two long lever arms — the femur above and the tibia below — making it highly susceptible to forces from the hip, ankle, and foot. This is why knee pain often originates from problems above or below the knee rather than from the knee joint itself.
Common causes of chronic knee pain include patellofemoral pain syndrome (pain around or behind the kneecap, often called runner’s knee), osteoarthritis (degenerative cartilage loss), patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee), IT band syndrome, meniscus degeneration, and post-surgical pain from prior procedures. In many cases, the underlying driver is a combination of muscle weakness, poor movement mechanics, and deconditioning that developed gradually over time.

The Physical Therapy Approach
Our approach starts with a comprehensive evaluation to identify what is actually driving your pain. We assess your knee joint mobility, quadriceps and hip strength, foot and ankle mechanics, movement patterns during walking and squatting, and any contributing factors from the low back and hip.
Treatment then targets the specific deficits identified. Quadriceps strengthening is almost always a central component — research consistently shows that restoring quadriceps strength is the single most important factor in reducing knee pain and improving function. We also address hip weakness (particularly the glute medius, which controls knee alignment during weight bearing), improve mobility where it is restricted, and retrain movement patterns to reduce abnormal stress on the joint.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Many patients come to us after failed experiences elsewhere — cortisone injections that provided temporary relief, generic exercise handouts that did not address their specific problem, or advice to simply stop the activities they enjoy. At Kinito Physical Therapy, we take the time to find the root cause, build a progressive program that challenges you appropriately, and work toward the goal of returning to full activity — not just managing symptoms.
